Originally the Jesuit Sentinel or Catholic Sentinel, the weekly is founded by Bishop Joseph Fenwick and published from offices located at 28 State Street. The official newspaper of the Boston Catholic archdiocese, it is the first and oldest Catholic newspaper in the U.S. Purchased by Henry Devereux and Patrick Donahoe, it is renamed the Literary and Catholic Sentinel and moves to today’s 1 Devonshire Place (then 11 Devonshire Street) on January 3, 1835. Renamed the Boston Pilot in 1836, then The Pilot in 1858, its circulation climbs to over 100,000 readers, and it reacquired by the archdiocese in 1873. John Boyle O’Reilly becomes editor in 1876. It more becomes the official newspaper of the archdiocese in 1908, moves to 607 Washington Street, to 2121 Commonwealth Avenue, and subsequently to Braintree, and continues to publish today.
